Baroque & Chic

Blue in perfect harmony

I bought these guess shoes almost 3 years ago, but I haven't had the privilege to enjoy them until last Sunday. I was determined to find a dress that would make them pop like never before. My first choice went for a solid color, maybe a white or peach hued number. But the more I thought of it, the more cliche it became. I wanted to bend the rules on purpose, wear it in a way that would cause controversy.

When I saw this Baroque & Chic body-con, I could instantly identify the resemblance of the blue with my shoes.  As usual as it seems, a head to toe blue themed outfit might come as an unexpected choice. The fear of modern fashion culture to match shoes with dress came in as an advantage. I certainly was in love with the way Valentino styled his baroque/delft dresses for his Fall/Winter 2013 collection.

At the same time I chose to wear a metal plate belt. The reason I think it works is because the print frames beautifully around my curves. It creates an inviting scheme for a waist belt. I didn't want to steal the show from the dress, belt and shoes, so I opted for a black and gold Alexander McQueen inspired box-clutch. I kept the rest quite minimal: no necklace and limited bracelets.

Givenchy Inspired

Creating a personal style...

One of the poor perceptions most fashion lovers have when styling up their clothes is that each piece has to be current and from the latest collections seen on the runway. When I first fell in love with fashion, I used to think so as well.  It can be very tempting to seek to be trendy, instead of creating your own style; which of course takes more effort. As Coco Chanel once said: "Fashion fades, but Style is Eternal...".

Since I moved to the Netherlands, finding my own style has become easier as I learned creative ways of incorporating my wardrobe into a variety of looks. What I found here was
fashion-freedom, the ability to create a style that reflects your personality as a whole. I enjoy Mixing and matching pieces from a certain season, era or culture. I seek mostly for timeless pieces that I can easily transcend into different seasons of the year. There is a certain pleasure in enjoying that favorite blouse time after time.

For my outfit, I was inspired by Givenchy's F/W '12 Rottweiler t-shirt. Last year I found a similar jumper at Zara. I chose to pair it with this "very summer-ish" pleated skirt, which is one of my favorite vintage pieces from Episode. I updated the whole outfit by adding a pair of pointy flats, those like Michelle Obama use to wear. The overall look is very lady-like, but a good representation of my personal style.

Girl's Day Out

Travel, Shopping, Meet & Greet

A simple gathering with my girls, some shopping and a nice dinner....this is my definition of a perfect "Girl's day out". We chose for an unexpected trip to Antwerp, by far my favorite place to shop.

Once again the city was filled with allure, and full of things to see. The Belgians celebrated their national liberation day by parading the streets in vintage attires and driving automobiles built in that era. The street performers and musicians set up a cozy mood, and combined with the beautiful architectures, makes it an almost movie-like experience.

Our day started with a quick coffee stop at Starbucks, then we quickly went off for the main reason of our trip.
The stores we visited included I-Am, Urban Outfitters, Levi's, River Island and a special meet and greet at Forever Flawless cosmetics.

Urban Outfitters is THE store for art and fashion lovers, they offer a number of contemporary, and redesigned vintage pieces. I love the carefully decorated interior, and the small selection of creative books they have to offer. It definitely gives the store a funky/intellectual feel. Although the prices can be a little bit on the right side, the clothes are quite unique, and they rarely have bulks of the same items hanging on the racks.

We also paid a visit to Forever Flawless cosmetics.
Forever flawless is a very young brand of exclusive diamond infused cosmetics. They are created to help purify the skin and unclog the pores from daily toxic elements. They have four main collections of products. The White, Blue, Pink and Black Diamond Collection.
This time I will focus on the Black Diamond Collection.

As most women of African Descent, I also suffer from hyperpigmentation and two-toned skin. So I constantly struggle to keep my skin complexion looking even toned, and without spots. But as much as I try, it just keeps returning. As I was explaining my problem to the sales representative, she introduced me to the Black Diamond Collection. This line was created to defy the premature signs of aging, created by constant exposure to toxins, e.g. make-up, dust, pollution, and excessive sun-light.

She recommended me the Age-defying thermal mask and tested it on my skin right away. She damped my face with a wet cloth and applied the mask directly onto my skin. I could instantly feel the mask heating up and purifying my skin. She removed it after three minutes, and I saw results immediately. I just couldn't believe my eyes, and usually I am very skeptical about these type of things. My skin looked so soft, and my pores were closed. She explained that the mask helps stimulate the renewal process of the epidermis, which in turn helps the skin's natural process of getting rid of spots, and under tones. The mask is also said to unclog pores, and help the skin detoxify itself.

I have been using the mask once a week. After the first usage, I have experienced allot of breakouts. After the second usage my skin turned even softer and my pores looked tight and closed.  I can still see the black spots, but my complexion looks more even-toned, and less scared.

I highly recommend to pay a visit to the Forever Flawless store, located at the Wijnegem Shopping Center at Antwerp. The girls are amazing and very enthusiastic. They offer the best service and personal attention.

So this by far was my report on Antwerp's unexpected visit. I hope you've enjoyed the trip.

The writings on the wall

Oh my lovely #quotes

A Great day begins with a great attitude.
I always start my day with a number of positive and motivational quotations on faith, love, life and wisdom. It's a way of safeguarding a healthy mental state and being productive altogether. The outside world can be so noisy, that we forget to be grateful and acknowledge the simple things in life. We forget to:
Live every moment...
...with intensity and passion for we are a work in progress and each day carries its own lesson
Laugh every day...
...until your belly hurts, for it nourishes the soul and brings out the best us
Love beyond words...
...and make it an everyday decision to acknowledge one another through our actions.

These are the writings on my wall:

For my outfit of the day I wore a simple black pencil skirt with a fun "help" jumper. I love the baseball inspired font on the jumper.
I love how the wedge sneakers keep the whole look fresh, while the ear-piece adds an unexpected surprise. Throw on a leather jacket to create a though look, that is still feminine.

What are your thoughts?
